IQ, Academic, and Giftedness Testing in Bedford, NS
Child Assessment for Intelligence, School Performance, and Giftedness

Although many of the assessments at Bedford
Psychologists are for issues such as Learning Disorders (problems related to
math, reading, and writing skills) or ADHD, we also offer IQ and educational
testing for children, teens, and adults.
An intelligence or psycho-educational assessment can be very beneficial even if the primary goal is not the diagnosis of a clinical disorder. People may initiate an IQ or academic assessment when they first notice signs of struggling in school, when they wish to identify academic strengths and weaknesses, or when they are wondering about giftedness or exceptional intellectual abilities.
For example, a parent may request a reading assessment (which may focus on spelling, reading fluidity, phonetic decoding, reading comprehension, etc.) following comments by teachers about reading-related struggles in the classroom. This assessment may identify particular problem areas in reading - which could then be used to develop a plan for parents and teachers to improve the child’s reading skills…before it becomes a more serious problem.
Typically, an IQ or a focused academic assessment takes less time to complete (and is less expensive) than a full Learning Disorder or ADHD assessment.

Reasons for IQ Testing, Academic Assessments, & Giftedness Evaluations

Early Identification of Potential Problems
The earlier a problem in academic skills is identified, the sooner steps can be taken to address and remedy the problem.
Career Planning
An assessment may be useful to those considering a career change, those wondering about possible college or university paths, and those returning to school or upgrading their education.
Ruling Out Learning Disorders
When a child is struggling in school, Learning Disorders are not the only possible explanation. For example, poor school performance may not be related to a lack of ability or intelligence, but rather, to peer difficulties, emotional or behavioral issues, a lack of confidence, depression and anxiety, or memory issues - all of which are issues we can evaluate during an child assessment.
Honest Academic and Intellectual Evaluations
Many parents believe that school report cards have evolved into vague cut-and-paste "mumbo jumbo" that give very little concrete information on a child’s actual level of achievement. Individualized IQ and academic testing can provide a comprehensive and honest evaluation that is simply not found on school report cards.
Testing for Exceptional Intellectual Abilities or Giftedness
A formal IQ assessment using a standardized and validated test (unlike those found on the internet) will provide a detailed evaluation of intellectual ability and cognitive strengths.
Curiosity
Sometimes people (typically adults) just want to know their actual IQ with a properly validated test. We can definitely assist you with this request!
Special Funding and Resources
A diagnosis, if applicable, may result in eligibility for disability funding in Nova Scotia, in-school academic assistance, access to specialized programs, tutors, and other resources to help children demonstrate their potential (in the case of academic challenges) or take advantage of their gifts (in the case of exceptional academic or intellectual ability).
